A look inside the curation of
Bridge:
a pitched Netflix docu-series, co-curated by me, Pegah Serajeh, and Sarah McKinnon.
A question for listeners: What does it mean to be seen? Why is it important to be seen as people?
We decided to team up with Netflix and propose a Docu-series titled: Bridge. We will be showcasing families and patients with rare genetic diseases to raise awareness.
For humans, and a topic as complex as whole genome sequencing, to be understood, we must exercise transparency. Transparency requires two people to cross a bridge–to be honest, raw, through uncharted waters. We can become the bridge. Our interpretation of a bridge is: two fixed points, that wouldn’t get a chance to meet otherwise: an unknown battleground and the public eye. families and the technology which can assist them…so let’s make them seen.
To visually display what we’re trying to achieve in the first season of Bridge, we outlined a couple of episodes so you can understand the type of impact we are trying to make.
Because this is a global issue, we want to make sure that our outreach is global. By highlighting a variety of different genetic diseases, we want to make sure that populated and remote, developed and underserved areas are highlighted, as well as places that do and do not have the technology needed to get whole genome sequencing.
Episodes centered around families around the globe, interviewed and painted through the eyes of a native filmmaking team in their language, in their culture, and in their honesty.
We will be partnering with different foundations who will be nominating families to be featured on our docu-series, having their stories be heard so people who struggle alongside them in a different country, or in a faraway place, feel less alone. This will help us create a community around rare genetic disease and the journey each individual goes through to unify the struggle in trying to end the wait.
